  • Introduction

ALICE Barbara (Brechin) O'HEARN, originally of Barre, VT (& for many, many years - Alstead, NH) died on May 7, 2011 (Mother’s Day Weekend) at “Valley Terrace” Assisted Living Facility in Wilder (near Norwich), Vermont. She was born June 12, 1938, in Barre, Vermont - the 1st daughter / 3rd child (fo seven, eventually) of Russell & Albertine (Goulet) Brechin. Alice was a graduate of Spaulding High School, Barre, VT. She received her Bachelor of Arts in classics from the University of Vermont, Burlington & her Master of Education from Keene State College in Keene, N.H, years later. For many years, Mrs. O’Hearn taught English/Latin at Springfield High School (VT) & she taught Latin, Greek & English for 26 years at Green Mountain Union High School in Chester, VT before finally retiring in June of 2007 at the age of 69. In her early years of teaching, she taught in Syracuse, N.Y. (where she met “Whiety” - Bob O’Hearn, who she would marry on July 6, 1963 in Stowe, VT (where, incidentally, they are both now buried)...Early on, (before she had 7 kids of her own in the span of 9 years, 1964-1973!) she also taught in & Scituate, Mass. & also eventually Derby, VT - just below Canada. From 1983 to 2003, Alice also worked for “Granite State Marketing Research” of Londonderry, N.H., doing various surveys. And she even had a side-AVON business around her long-time home-town of Alstead, NH. Alice was a caring, loving & devoted mother to her children. She was dedicated to inspiring young minds & encouraging her students to want to learn. She was a dear friend to many who will cherish fond memories of great times & her smile & her chatty conversations & stories... Her spirit will be at home in the nature of New England, especially among the hills of her birth-state of lovely, green Vermont. Alice is survived by her 5 sons: the oldest - Sean O’Hearn, of Orlando, FL., Shannon, of Douglas, AZ, Scott, of Fairlee, VT - Todd, of Newbury Park, CA., & Ryan, of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; & her 2 daughters, Theresa, of Denver, CO & Erin, of Boston, MA.; Alice also leaves behind 2 brothers: Wendell Brechin, of Woodstock, CT., & John Brechin, of Lombard, IL.; as well as 2 sisters, Pauline Sherwood, of Burlington, VT & Helen Ferrari, of Modena, Italy; 11 grandchildren & nieces & nephews. Alice was predeceased in death by her parents, Russell (1994) & Albertine (1993) & her husband, Robert J. O'Hearn, who died nearly a year prior, on June 22, 2010; & two brothers, Donald & Paul Brechin.
