7 Memories, Stories & Photos about Bertha

John and Bertha Sositko
John and Bertha Sositko
Jan "John" and Bronislawa Rosalia "Bertha Rose" (Zlatykanicz) Sositko 'Susitko' in the 1930's or 1940's in Hamilton, Butler County, Ohio. They were married in Hamilton, Ohio in December 1908 (between Christmas Day and New Year's Eve). John and Bertha were both born in Muszyna, Poland. John was born in 1882, the son of Stephen Susitko 'Stephanus Susidko' and Marianne Makowicz. Bertha was born in 1883, the daughter of Peter 'Piotr' 'Petrus' Zlatykanicz and Apolonia F. Chmielowska. John and Bertha were Catholic and they were members of St. Joseph's Parish in Hamilton, Ohio. They're buried in St. Stephen's cemetery.
Several family members (descendants of four of their children) has this same exact picture of John and Bertha.
I have a copy of an audio tape of John talking in English with family members and singing songs in Polish on Christmas Day, December 25, 1962. One of the songs he sings sounds like the Christmas song called Gloria in Excelsis Deo.

Zlatykanicz Siblings
Zlatykanicz Siblings
The Zlatykanicz siblings in the early 1940's in Hamilton, Butler Co., Ohio. The siblings in the photo are Bronislawa "Bertha" [Zlatykanicz] Sositko (born 1883), Maria "Mary" [Zlatykanicz] Kroczaloski {also spelled as Krocyolowski, Kroczolowski and Kroczalowski} (born 1876), Andrzej "Andrew" "Andy" Zlatykanicz (born 1885), and Franciszka "Frances" [Zlatykanicz] Grajkoski (born 1881). They all lived in Hamilton, Ohio except for Mary Kroczaloski. Mary lived in Michigan. Mary and Andy both lived in Pennsylvania at one time. A brother named John lived in Pennsylvania. They were all born in Muszyna, Poland and baptized in the Catholic church there. They were the children of Peter Zlatykanicz and Apolonia F. Chmielowska (also spelled as Apollonia and sometimes misspelled as Paulina or Abolinia Hnielswki or Hnielwski), the daughter of Jozef 'Joseph' Chmielowski and Emerentia Goedl (daughter of Franciszek "Franciscus" Goedl and Emerentiana Eva Gertrude Roskovanyi).
Bertha's Pierogi recipe (with the potato & cheese filling and pan fried in butter and onion after boiling them) is still cooked by some of her descendants. I cook them but I pan fry half of them in butter and onion and half of them in bacon grease and onion (but do not eat the onion) like many of the family members.
Update: In 2006 I received information on a Roskovanyi family going back from the year 1240 to the 1800's (Roskovany, Hungary [now Rozkovany, Slovakia]). I also have sketches of the sequences of Roskovanyi coat of arms from over the centuries.
Update: I was contacting (on the phone) by Donna (Kroczolowski) Graat on Dec. 6, 2009. She's the granddaughter of Mary (Zlatykanicz) Kroczaloski. Donna gave me some information and a few stories on her grandmother. She said that her grandmother cooked a Pumpkin Soup recipe. It tasted just like Pumpkin Pie but it was a soup.

Bertha Sositko and Children 1925
Bertha Sositko and Children 1925
Bertha (Zlatykanicz) Sositko and four of her children in order by age: Helen Josephine- age 10, Mary- age 9, Geneva E.- age 7 1/2, and Joseph "Joe" Sositko- age 4 1/2 years old. This was Geneva Sositko's First Communion in the spring in about 1925. The family's church was St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hamilton, Butler County, Ohio. Take notice to the girls with their Dutch Boy haircuts.
Bertha was born in 1883 in Muszyna, Poland to Peter and Apolonia (Chmielowska) Zlatykanicz. She married John Sositko in 1908 in Hamilton, Ohio.
Helen married George A. Henry (the son of Lena Tribbey, raised up in Oxford, Ohio and Leroy "Roy" Henry, born in Darrtown, Milford Twp, Butler Co., Ohio) in 1934. Helen married second to Fred W. Cook (George's youngest half brother) in 1946.
Helen talked about her childhood to her daughter, Terry Ann (Cook) Tuttle Bradley. She talked about how she remembers going ice skating with her brothers and sisters on the canal when the canal would freeze over in the winter in Hamilton, Ohio.

Bertha, George, and Helen
Bertha, George, and Helen
Bronislawa "Bertha" (Zlatykanicz) Sositko with her son in law, George Henry and her daughter, Helen Josephine (Sositko) Henry in Hamilton, Butler County, Ohio in late spring (in June?) of 1934. Helen was pregnant and 19 years old. George was still 29 years old. George was the son of Lena Tribbey (raised partly in Oxford, Ohio) and Leroy Henry (raised in Darrtown, Ohio).
George was Helen's first husband and they were married in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hamilton, Ohio. No photos of their wedding have been found but the newspaper said Helen was a lovely bride in her wedding gown of white lace and satin with flowing veil with white slippers and hose and carried white carnations. The maid of honor (Thelma Henry) wore a pink frock with gray accessories and carried pink carnations. Helen was pregnant with their first child in this photo.
Helen later married second to Fred W. Cook (George's younger brother) in 1946. Helen and Fred were my mother, Terry (Cook) Tuttle Bradley's parents.
Helen lived at her mother in law, Lena (Tribbey) Henry Cook's house when she was married to George and she lived in the same house at beginning of her marriage to Fred.
Sositko has also been spelled as Sitko.
