Elizabeth Bathory - Blood Countess
Countess Elizabeth Bathory de Ecsed was born on August 7th, 1560, and died August 21st, 1614. Elizabeth was a countess from the powerful Bathory noble family of Hungary.
Her husband, Ferenc Nadasdy, was the leader of the Hungarian troops who fought against the Ottomans during the Long War of 1593-1606. Elizabeth Bathory was an educated woman speaking four languages and managed their vast estates - often speaking up for women's rights for the 'common' people.
Although she has been accused of hundreds of deaths which has gained her the now-popular nickname "Blood Countess", it is widely speculated that all charges upon her of any brutality were made simply due to her being a woman in an extreme position of power.
