During World War II he moved to Uvalde, Texas, where the Army Air Corps had built an airfield for primary training of army pilots. He was employed as a civilian in ground service until the base closed at war's end. The part he later talked about the most was how he enjoyed taxiing PT-17s and PT-19s to and from hangers and line-ups on the ramp. After the war he became quite skilled as a carpenter and that became his career until retirement in the early 1970s.
