Obit published in The Day, New London, Connecticut on January 18, 2010 Harrison Francis "Harry" Day Westerly - Harrison "Harry" Francis Day, age 74, of 43 Grassland Way, Westerly, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Jan. 16, 2010, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Margaret (Mandella) Day, his devoted daughter, Kathleen D. Dreher and her husband, Andrew K. Dreher, and three adoring granddaughters, Meagan, Cameron and Colette Dreher. He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews and in-laws. He was predeceased by his parents, Harrison and Elizabeth Day; his brother, Thomas Day; and sister, Patricia Gemma. Harry was born in Providence on Sept. 13, 1935. He attended St. Theresa School in Providence, where he met his best friend, Ed Hogan, who survives him. He was a graduate of LaSalle Academy, Class of 1953, where he was on the track and swim teams. Harry was a Korean War veteran, who served his country in the Air Force from 1956 to 1959. Upon his return from the war, utilizing the benefits of the G.I. Bill, he attended Boston University and graduated with a degree in child psychology. He then obtained his master's degree in education from Eastern CT State University in 1961. He also obtained his 6th year degree in public school administration. Harry began his teaching career at Claude Chester Elementary School in Groton. He was a classroom teacher for two years, then appointed Assistant Principal, then promoted to Principal in 1963. He became a much loved and respected member of the Claude Chester community. He was known for making sure parents had every resource available to help their children succeed and strived to make school a place where children felt safe and loved. There was a time in his career when a Superintendent wanted to relocate all the principals in the district to other schools. When parents and members of the Claude Chester community realized they would lose "Mr. Day", a parade of parents, teachers, children, police and firefighters marched through a Board of Education meeting, all chanting and holding signs saying "Mr. Day must stay!" Community members got their way and "Mr. Day" did stay. He devoted 25 years of his career to the National Chapter 1 Project, known as the Comer Project. He was principal of Claude Chester School for 34 years. Upon his retirement in June 1997, the school planted a memorial garden in his honor and the school's address officially became "1 Harry Day Drive". He was inducted into the Groton Board of Education Hall of Fame in 2001. A tireless volunteer, Harry enjoyed his involvement on Westerly town committees. A member of the Westerly Democratic Committee, he served as President of the Westerly Town Council from 1976 through 1978. He was a founding member of Virtu, the annual art festival held in Westerly's Wilcox Park. He served on the Westerly Comprehensive Planning Committee and was Chairman of the Westerly Zoning Board for twelve years, recently retiring due to illness. He was a member of the Westerly Lions Club and a past President of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick. He was a life member of the Westerly Yacht Club, a member of the Calabrese Club and the Westerly Lodge of Elks. He also belonged to the Portuguese Holy Ghost Society and enjoyed volunteering his time cooking for their seasonal Fish and Chip dinners. He recently joined the Irish American Coastal Club. Harry was a Master Gardener, volunteering his time at The University of Rhode Island. He loved gardening and enjoyed growing a variety of vegetables for his family and friends. He was a past President of the Mystic Woodcarver's Club and was a talented wood carver. Throughout his retirement, he could be found either tending to his garden or in his workshop carving. Recently, he carved 40 angel pins for his family and the nurses and staff of Oncology & Hematology Associates of New London, who along with Dr. Hellman have cared for him with kindness, love and compassion for the past eighteen months. Harry also enjoyed fishing and exploring his family history. He loved traveling and particularly loved traveling to Italy. He was an avid reader and enjoyed sharing books with family and friends. Harry will be fondly remembered for his generosity and friendly, outgoing nature. He became a friend to everyone he met. Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce Street, Westerly is in charge of arrangements. In accordance with Harry's wishes there are no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday in St. Clare Church, Misquamicut, R.I. (the corner of Saint Clare Way and Crandall Ave., Misquamicut). Burial will be in St. Sebastian Cemetery. A fund has been established in Harry's memory to honor his love of poetry and his love for the Claude Chester School community. A special poetry section at the Claude Chester School library will be established in his honor.
