  • Obituary

At about 6:30 pm, as Crosby and his party headed back to the clubhouse, Crosby said, "That was a great game of golf, fellas. Let's go have a Coca-Cola." These were his last words. About 20 yards (18 m) from the clubhouse entrance, Crosby collapsed and died instantly from a massive heart attack. At the clubhouse and later in the ambulance, house physician Dr. Laiseca tried to revive him, but was unsuccessful. At Reina Victoria Hospital he was administered the last rites of the Catholic Church and was pronounced dead. He was 74 years old. On October 18, 1977, following a private funeral Mass at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Westwood, Crosby was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California.(His tombstone incorrectly identified his year of birth as 1904 instead of 1903.) A plaque was placed at the golf course in his memory.

Bing Crosby Laid Back
Bing Crosby Laid Back
Bing Crosby in an iconic pose - lying on the grass, pipe in mouth, and petting his dog.

Some attribute Bing's laid back attitude to smoking marijuana, which he admitted to when it was legal early in his career. In the 1960's and 1970's, he told interviewers that he supported the decriminalization of marijuana.

Whatever the reason, Bing Crosby always portrayed the image of an easy going man and this was amplified by his easy and soothing singing.

Bing Crosby
Bing Crosby
Bing Crosby, the most wonderful crooner of all time, with his signature pipe. Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without hearing "White Christmas" sung by Bing.

He was born Harry Lillis Crosby in May of 1903 (the same month and year as Bob Hope)in Tacoma Washington - certainly Tacoma's most famous son! Seeing Al Jolson on stage in Spokane when Bing was just 14 inspired him to become a performer. When he was 23, Paul Whiteman hired him as a boy singer . . . and the rest is history.

He starred in movies, radio, and television. When I was a child (and into early adulthood), Bing's Christmas show on tv (which included his family) was the highlight of the season.

Bing also started the "Crosby Clambake", a golf tournament at Pebble Beach, in 1937. He was an avid golfer and he died in 1977 after playing a round of golf in Spain.
