He married Rosalynn Eleanor Carter on July 7, 1946. He would also marry Rosalynn (Smith) Carter on July 7, 1946 in Plains, Sumter County. They had children Jack Carter, James Earl Carter III, Donnel Jeffrey Carter, and Amy Lynn Carter.

At the Democratic Convention in 1976, Presidential nominee Jimmy Carter kissing Rosalynn Carter while his family (including his mother, Lillian) surrounds them. Jimmy Carter was President of the United States from 1977 to 1981, losing the 1980 presidential race to Ronald Reagan. The little girl is his daughter Amy, who lived in the White House with Jimmy and Rosalynn.
