  • Introduction

    In the 1930 census, Leonard stated that he was a laborer in plumbing and that he was born in Louisiana (this is an error - he was born in Sicily.) The family was living in a rented home in North East, PA and in the household were Mary, wife, and son, Frankie age 2. He stated that he was 29 when he married and was unable to read or write. The family did not have a radio. In the 1940 census, Leonard, 49, was living with wife Mary, 36, and son Frank, 19, in North East PA. Leonard was born in Italy, Mary in Lousiana, and Frank in PA. No one in the household was working but Leonard stated that he had income from other sources. On his WW2 draft card, filled out in 1942, he said that he was 5 ft 5in tall, weighed 195 lobs, had hazel eyes, black hair, and light brown complexion. He named Frank Conti as the person who would always know where he was.

A photo of the headstone of Leonard and Mary Pinna. Leonard was born January 15, 1891 in Marsala, Italy. He came to America in October, 1904 at the age of 13. He married Mary Allessie in 1921 in Erie, Pa. Mary was born December 5, 1903 in Melville, LA. Leonard and Mary moved to San Jose, CA in the early '50's, where Mary worked for the old Sunshine Packing Company.
Leonard was the son of Frank Pinna and Lucia Alana....Mary was the daughter of Salvatore "Sam" Allessie and Josephine Regie, immigrants from Sicily.
