7 Memories, Stories & Photos about Lula

Emery Holmes

A photo of Life in Sheridan, Coon Creek Picnic: My father Emery Holmes with my mother Mattie & Lula Lewis, Harry Nonguisses, & Miss Curtis taken at Coon Creek. My folks knew one another for ten years before they married. Dad would go to Sheridan & Mama would take him to collect gooseberries or mulberries, go on picnics, or to dances. She also went to Auburn with Aunt Lou. Their families knew them well. Sometimes Mama would go to the station and dad would blow the train whistle as he went by.

Lula Lewis in Sacramento
Lula Lewis in Sacramento
A photo of Lula Lewis. Aunt Lou & Mama were living at Aunt Marys when their father died. When they started to work, they only took jobs where they could be together. When word was sent to Mama that there was an opening at Weinstocks & Lubbin, they hired Aunt Lou also. They sewed dresses and made hats. Aunt Lou worked there until she married Ira Augustus Briggs (b Sep 20, 1885) on Dec 1, 1909.

Circa 1900, she's quite the fashion plate? It's probable that she made everything she's wearing but the purse and gloves.

Lewis Sisters, Martha & Lula
Lewis Sisters, Martha & Lula
This is my favorite photo of Mama & Aunt Lou. I just love this picture! Both were homemakers, made jelly, canned fruit, & made all our clothes & underwear which Mama trimmed with crochet. Before marriage, they worked at Weinstocks as seamstresses. They never separated until they had to move from Hammonton. They would talk hours on the phone & loved Gunsmoke on TV. It reminded them of Sheridan where they grew up.

Hammonton, California Town Reunion
This is my mother Martha Lewis Homes & her sister Lula Lewis Briggs at their town reunion standing in front of the Post Office. It was a gold dredging town & everyone had to move so they could dredge the town itself. They had a reunion today (May 18, 2002) and my son Jan attended.

Uncle Walter Visits
Uncle Walter Visits
Uncle Walter on one of his rare visits, standing with his sister Lou & brother Will. He really didn't know his sisters well since he left the ranch when they were children. He married Mamie Lawrence who had 2 daughters. We never met her & her daughters. When I lived in Alamo, my parents and I went to visit him in San Francisco. His wife had died and he lived alone.

Your W.Briggs looks like my Briggs family, also in SFO in 1850/60. Do you have his parents names or siblings? Annie
