Raymond Parker Mcminds was born on June 15, 1928 in Baker City, Baker County, Oregon United States to Rose Ella Mattix McMinds and Hollis Mcminds, and had siblings Martha Marie McMinds, Maxine Mae McMinds, Louis Sampson McMinds, Mildred Matilda (McMinds) Daley, Ralph Gideon McMinds, Myrtle Rose (McMinds) Brown, and Margaret Caroline McMinds. He married Priscilla Mae "Sally" Jarvis in 1950 in Estancia, NM County and they later divorced in 1960. They had children June (McMinds ), Roseanne Lewallen, and Beverly Ray (McMinds). He married Leona (Felde) McMinds, and they were married until Raymond's death on December 27, 1984 in Missoula, Missoula County, Montana.

  • Introduction

    Raymond was a lively boy and had a normal childhood until his brother Ralph drowned in front of him. They were at a riverfront park near the Columbia River. Riptides from the influx of rain the day before made the water treacherous. His other brother Louis was with them, too. They tried to reach Ralph but the current was too strong. An unknown man also leapt in to help, to no avail. Ralph died at 13 years old, Louis was 16 and Ray was only 9. There's no doubt that this event affected Ray through his formative years and into adulthood. He repeatedly had scrapes with the law through the 1950s in his 20s.

  • Early Life & Education

    In 1946 in Portland Oregon, Raymond enlisted in the regular Army. He was 18, designated to the Air Corps and initially scheduled for Hawaii. There is no indication he actually went there. Education on the enlistment form said, "grammar school only."

  • Professional Career

    Raymond did as many odd jobs as he could. Sometimes he worked at rodeos. No one knew exactly what he did for cash. He moved around constantly. We have a letter from a wife, seeing if we'd buy their car because they needed the cash. He had a hard scrabble life. Some of his hardship came from his robbing, kiting checks and once stealing from a sister. But as a kid, I thought he was mysterious and very cool!

  • Personal Life & Family

    We saw him infrequently and never knew when he'd turn up. He did talk occasionally about rodeo work. He enjoyed it and also talked about how hard it was.

When I was about 5 (1953), Raymond came to visit our family in Lovelock, Nevada. He had the BEST present for us kids. It was a paper bag full of Bazooka gum. I think he got a dollar's worth which was 100 pieces of gum! I'd never seen that much gum in my life! He only stayed the day & left before nightfall.
