3 Memories, Stories & Photos about Thomas

Barkers in California
Barkers in California
A photo of Emmit, Thomas, Mary Ann, and Martha Barker. Uncle Thomas & his sister Rebecca crossed the plains in a covered wagon in 1853. He later sent money back to Illinois for Martha, Mary, and Emmit. In San Francisco, all their trunks and baggage was stolen & Uncle Emmit had to buy clothes for them. He filed a claim for 160 acres near Sheridan in 1864.

California pioneers Emmit, Thomas, Mary Ann, and Martha Barker. Remember "Uncle Thomas" from last week? His sister Becky and he went to California via covered wagon in 1853. Then he sent for Emmit, Mary Ann, and Martha . . . but it wasn't easy: "all their trunks and baggage was stolen (in San Francisco) & Uncle Emmit had to buy clothes for them"

Everything turned out OK - Emmit bought 160 acres of land in Placer county (just north of San Francisco) in 1864. It must have been pretty isolated as the post office didn't open until 1868. Talk about being pioneers!

It's the family stories and photos like these that I personally find fascinating.
