At the time of his discharge from service in the Civil War, The "New York, Civil War Muster Roll Abstracts" gave his physical description as 6 feet tall, blue eyes, light hair and light complexion. His occupation was listed as farmer. He was an artist. He had a studio and taught oil painting. He was considered a "dandy" who wore brocaded vests with pearl studs and had a collection of beautiful canes.
