Obituary
(copied from newspaper clipping - November 11, 1946)
A collision of five automobiles and a truck early Monday evening on the rain-soaked Albany Post road a few hundred yards south of the Staatsburg cut-off, injured nine persons.
A 1935 coach driven by Mr. Ernst Karlson, Rhinebeck was going north - it became involved in a head-on collision with a car driven by Mr. Lewis, Linden, NJ. Mr. Lewis was in collision with a 1 1/2 ton truck driven by Lloyd Rivenburgh, Clermont which left the highway and hit a guard rail. A southbound car driven by Mr. Quin, Carteret, NJ later became involved in a collision with the Lewis coup and another northbound car driven by Richard Hargrave, White Plains collided with the rear of the Quin coupe.
Mr. Triebel had been called to the scene with 2 tow trucks to assist in clearing the damaged vehicles from the highway. Troopers said he was standing on the highway directing the movement of the tow trucks when he was struck by a car driven by Allen Taylor, 46, 30 Locust Hill Av., Yonkers. Mr. Taylor, troopers said, told them that visibility was poor and the headlights of one of the tow trucks prevented him from seeing Mr. Triebel on the highway. The front of his car struck the garage owner, and hurled him several feet.
(I was told that he only got a broken leg from this accident and his family was expecting him to come home from the hospital soon when a blood clot got into his heart or lung and suddenly he was gone.)
