William boarded Lusitania as saloon (1st class) with his parents and younger brother Dean (4). The ship was struck by a Torpedo from a German U-boat then sank on May 7, 1915 off the coast of Ireland. The family sadly perished in the sinking.

During the sinking, the family was struggling to get up on the deck staircase. News claimed that William Jr and his brother survived. When William's body was recovered, he was first thought to be Dean-but it turned out the body was William Jr.

During the sinking, the Hodges family was last seen climbing up the staircase on the decks. William Sterling Jr's body was found and buried in Cobh, Cork Ireland.
