Alice Pike Barney - American Painter

Photo Details

Alice Pike Barney was an American painter. When she was 25 and the young mother of one daughter, she stayed at a hotel in New York where Oscar Wilde happened to be staying as well. Spending the day with him, he inspired her to become an artist. She later traveled to Paris to study art. Like many women of her era, she was involved in many enterprises. Not only did she exhibit her art, but she also invented and patented mechanical devices, wrote and performed in several plays and an opera, to promote the arts in Washington, D.C. Some of her paintings are in the Smithsonian.

This photo of her looks like a piece of art to me!
