Asa & Ethel Johnson, Blackstone College, 1919
Asa & Ethel Johnson, Blackstone College, 1919 Virginia: This large group photo shows a number of the participants at the first Virginia Conference School [for training Sunday school teachers.]This was run by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South at the (Methodist) Blackstone College. My great-grandparents, Asa and Ethel Chesterman Johnson and three of their four sons (all of Richmond, Virginia) are pictured.
The photo has amazing detail but a strange, dark tone ... my grandfather and his brothers had light brown hair but in this photo, their hair looks black. This particular building burned down in the 1920's. Interesting details are the Edison-style bare bulb hanging in the center of the entranceway and the fire-escape ladder on the roof at the right.
Date & Place: at Blackstone College in Blackstone, Nottoway County, Virginia USA

I want to build a place where my son can meet his great-grandparents. My grandmother Marian Joyce (Benning) Kroetch always wanted to meet her great-grandchildren, but she died just a handful of years before my son's birth. So while she didn't have the opportunity to meet him, at least he will be able to know her. For more information about what we're building see About AncientFaces. My father's side is full blood Sicilian and my mother's side is a combination of Welsh, Scottish, German and a few other European cultures. One of my more colorful (ahem black sheep) family members came over on the Mayflower. He was among the first to be hanged in the New World for a criminal offense he made while onboard the ship.
