Civil War PTSD
Dr Charles H. Nichols was the first superintendent of a hospital created for the treatment of PTSD and other conditions, during the Civil War.
Dorothea Dix was a leading light behind the creation of St Elizabeth's Hospital a place for the âenlightened curative treatment of the insane of the Army, Navy, and District of Columbia.â
Dr. Nichols was appointed to be superintendent of the hospital by President Millard Fillmore in 1852. During the Civil War, he and other male members of the staff would ride out to the nearby battlefields and treat patients, bringing them back to the hospital when possible. those who did not survive (Union and Confederate) are buried on the hospital grounds.
Dr Nichols served as superintendent of St Elizabeths' until 1877.
