Confederate Spy Belle Boyd

Isabella Marie "Belle" Boyd was a spy for Confederate Army and gave information to General Stonewall Jackson.

She was born in what was then Virginia (now West Virginia) in 1844. After a Union soldier tore down her Confederate flag and replaced it with a Union flag, and then had the effrontery to curse at her mother, she shot him. She wasn't jailed but she was put under Union watch. She then did what any other good Southern belle would do - she charmed the soldiers and got military secrets that she passed on to the Confederacy. Her unchivalrous lover turned her in. She was jailed.

Following the war, she went to England where she married a Union soldier and took up acting. After her husband died, she returned to the US and married twice more. Her grave marker read:

BELLE BOYD
CONFEDERATE SPY
BORN IN VIRGINIA
DIED IN WISCONSIN
ERECTED BY A COMRADE
