Douglas Van Buskirk, c1939
Douglas,beside an ancient bi-plane (I think). Douglas volunteered in the Canadian Air Force at the beginning of WWII. According to family history, he was lost in a mission over Germany.

Not positive, but appears to be a WWI era SE5a observation plane used by the Brits (mainly). That would date the photo to 1914-17 era. Also, it appears under his left elbow a portion of some kind of insignia (be it unit or individual) painted on side of plane. Clothing is definitely ca. WW1 not 2. While photo may have been taken in the '30's, this isn't what he flew.

The airplane in the photo is a Curtiss JN-4 "Jenny". Thousands of these were manufactured during World War I for use as trainers. According to Wikipedia, the Royal Canadian Air Force was also using them as trainers during World War I. I can't see any markings on the plane in the photo, but it's possible that Canada was still using JN-4s to train pilots as late as World War II.

I love antique photographs. In addition to sharing old photos of my family, I am also going through my collection of "antique store people". They've been sitting in a storage tub in my back room much too long and maybe some of their families will be able to find them here. If I'm able to identify the people in the photo, I upload it not only to AncientFaces, but also to Ancestry, FamilySearch, and Find-A-Grave. If the person in the picture is a military veteran, the photo also goes on Fold3. I figure that the more places I upload these pictures, the greater the chance that a relative will be able to find them.
