Eleanor & Claude Whitehead, 1945
Eleanor Nordene Sturman married SSgt Claude Jacob Whitehead, US Marine Corps on November 6, 1945 in San Diego, California. He was her older brother's best friend in the Marines and she was his pen pal during WWII. They met face to face for the first time in 1944 when he was recovering from an illness picked up on Guadalcanal. They were happily married for 40 years until his passing in 1986 from cancer.

Wow! So they fell in love via correspondence? What a romantic story, and just before Valentine's Day!
They did, and she still has every one of his letters, war-censored and all. The neatest ones are the V-mails, a sort of mini-fax--pre-email type of message.
