Frazer Baker Family

The Frazer Baker family within a year of the murder of Frazer Baker and his infant daughter.

Here's what happened: On the night of February 22, 1898, a fire was set in the back of the Baker family home (which was also the post office of Lake City, South Carolina). The family woke up and unsuccessfully tried to fight the fire. They were then forced to flee their home.

When they ran out, a group of white men who had surrounded their home/post office began firing on them. Frazer Baker was killed. His wife, Lavinia, was shot in the hand and the bullet passed through and killed the baby (Julia), who she was holding. The three eldest children were also seriously wounded.

The group of white men "quietly dispersed" and African-Americans, who were drawn by the gunfire, came to the aid of the family.

This is a picture of the surviving widow and five children.
