Photo Details

Jefferson Davis with three generations of his family.

Pictured (l to r): Varina Howell Davis Hayes Webb (1878 to 1934), Margaret Davis Hayes, Lucy White Hayes Young (1882 to 1966), Jefferson Davis, unidentified servant, Varina Howell Davis, and Jefferson Davis Hayes (1884-1975). Jefferson Davis Hayes legally changed to his name to Jefferson Hayes-Davis in 1890.

It's amazing to me that Jefferson Davis' grandson died in 1975!

Amber Haggins I don't understand the last name orders . What was the determining process?

Kathy Pinna Amber, Each grandchild is listed with his or her full name plus (in the case of a girl) her (later) married name. The grandson, Jefferson Davis Hayes (his birth name) later changed his name to Hayes Davis, probably in honor of his grandfather. The daughter, Margaret Davis Hayes is listed with her married name (Hayes). These are all Davis' children/grandchildren - it does get confusing, doesn't it? But that's how genealogy is through the generations! ;)
