Joan Crawford, just a couple of years after she signed a movie contract with MGM. She would go on to be an huge star in the 1920's and 1930's. Her popularity then waned but she made a comeback with the movie "Mildred "Pierce" and actually won the Academy Award for Best Actress for that picture.

Although her reputation may have been damaged by the controversial book "Mommie Dearest" (published a few years after her death - "no wire hangers!"), she remains in the public awareness because of all of her powerful roles.
