Joseph Hiram Johnson,VA Lottery Ticket,1842: This is a lottery ticket from the year 1842 found in the personal ledger book belonging to my great-great-grandfather,Joseph Hiram Johnson (1825 - 1879) of Richmond, Virginia. The ticket was sold for the benefit of Monongalia Academy in the western part of the state. According to the Monongalia History web site http://www.polsci.wvu.edu/wv/Monongalia/monhistory.html,
the Academy was founded in 1814 in Morgantown. That part of the state is now West Virginia and the school eventually became West Virginia University . ... show more
