Lawrence Sperry
Lawrence Sperry called his new propeller plane the Flivver of the air. It was affordable, it could land on roads, it could park in small spaces, and it went 100 miles an hour.
While he had several successful inventions (including the autopilot), this Flivver didn't seem to fly. Sperry died in 1923 (about a year later) while trying to fly the English Channel. He is seated in the plane in this photo.
