William Everett Bass joined the Confederate Army soon after this photo was taken and he was subsequently killed in the battle of the wilderness in Chancellorsville, Virginia on May 5th, 1863. It is said that the fighting was so intense, the area where his body fell contained a lot of dry grasses and woods and this area caught fire, burning many of the bodies. As such, William Everett Bass' body was not recognizable and was buried in a mass grave.

In the photo, it looks like Mary Ann was pregnant. Was she? That's quite a photo - and quite a story!

Yes, she was pregnant with John Robert Bass, who was born without a living father due to William's death in battle.
