William Everett Bass joined the Confederate Army soon after this photo was taken and he was subsequently killed in the battle of the wilderness in Chancellorsville, Virginia on May 5th, 1863. It is said that the fighting was so intense, the area where his body fell contained a lot of dry grasses and woods and this area caught fire, burning many of the bodies. As such, William Everett Bass' body was not recognizable and was buried in a mass grave.
In the photo, it looks like Mary Ann was pregnant. Was she? That's quite a photo - and quite a story!

Photographs and paintings of our ancestors
In the far past, we had paintings of family members - most usually these were reserved for the well off. The era of modern photography began with the daguerreotype, in 1839. Since the advent of photo...

Gary Gray
Gary Eugene Gray was born in northwest Louisiana to parents Ronald Eugene Gray and Melba Dean Tubbs Gray in northwest Louisiana. He has a keen interest in genealogy for the sake of preserving his family history not only for the present day family members, but future generations as well. You can find him on WikiTree, a free and open community of genealogy enthusiasts and also for all to enjoy free of charge. Gary is a graduate of the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin and he is also a licensed Certified Public Accountant in the State of Texas. Gary is married to Paula and they have one son, Connor. Together, they have a happy life. Gary's interests are his family and volunteering at his son's sporting events, science, history, politics, economics, business, sailing, flying, baroque classical music as well as ancient music, writing, genealogy, roller coasters, jet ski's, and just about anything that is fast and thrilling. During the early 1980's, Gary enjoyed skydiving, having made 217 jumps, with most of those being long duration free-fall.
I found that I am related to several famous people including famous singers, business people as well as state and national politicians. Additionally, I am related to famous people of the past including famous scientists and a famous fighter at the battle of the Alamo. The link to famous people runs through my paternal as well as maternal lines. Very exciting.

I'm a Founder of AncientFaces and support the community answering questions & helping members make connections to the past (thus my official title of Founder & Content and Community Support ). For me, it's been a labor of love for over 20 years. I truly believe with all of my heart that everyone should be remembered for generations to come. I am 2nd generation San Jose and have seen a lot of changes in the area while growing up. We used to be known as the "Valley of Heart's Delight" (because the Valley was covered with orchards and there were many canneries to process the food grown here, which shipped all over the US) - now we have adopted the nickname "Capital of Silicon Valley" and Apple, Ebay, Adobe, Netflix, Facebook, and many more tech companies are within a few miles of my current home in San Jose (including AncientFaces). From a small town of 25,000, we have grown to 1 million plus. And when you add in all of the communities surrounding us (for instance, Saratoga, where I attended high school, living a block from our previous Mayor), we are truly one of the big cities in the US. I am so very proud of my hometown. For more information see Kathy - Founder & Content and Community Director
My family began AncientFaces because we believe that unique photos and stories that show who people are/were should be shared with the world.

My Myers family came from Germany, ending up most living in Indian Territory (Oklahoma) to northern Texas. My Vannosdoll and Frisby family came from England, ending up in Kansas and I.T./Oklahoma. Unfortunately, I don't know much very about those two families as they have been hard to research. My Holcomb families are mostly from Oklahoma and Texas also. The Native/Spanish sides are of the Southwest region of the United States. Spanish, came from Spain, as explorers, eventually ending up in the Rio Arriba, New Mexico and San Luis Valley of Colorado areas. My Hall and Roland families lived in Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas.
