Mathias Henry's Obituary
The obituary of Mathias Henry, a Civil War Union Soldier. He was born in Ohio on December 25, 1834 on Christmas Day to Margaret (Simpson) and John Henry, who moved to Butler County, Ohio from Pennsylvania (proven by census records and etc).
Mathias was in the 35th. Ohio Infantry (O.V.I.), Company Ffrom August 20, 1861 to September 8, 1864 and the 2nd. Ohio Heavy Artillery from 1864 to 1865. He was captured on December 16, 1861 and was a POW for 8 months in Salisbury, North Carolina and he was wounded (WIA) on September 19, 1863 in Chickamauga, Georgia.
Mathias married Catherine Ellen Fetters after the war and had four children. His children's names were John, Edward, Margaret "Maggie" and Leroy Henry. Maggie died before her parents died.
Mathias died on April 12, 1914 at the age of 79 in Hamilton, Butler County, Ohio at Mercy Hospital. He lived in Darrtown (Milford Twp), Butler County, Ohio for most of his life.
Mathias and his brothers all left home to fight in the Civil War but Mathias was the only brother who lived during the war and came back home when it ended.
Mathias' siblings were William, Isabella, Margaret and John Henry. His mother also raised the children of Simeon Broadberry. They were Simeon and Mary Elizabeth Broadberry (or Bradbury). Mathias' mother is buried in Darrtown cemetery under the headstone that reads 'Margaret Broadberry' (the last name was probably a mistake made by Simeon Broadberry, Sr's grandchildren, the Phillips family).
Mathias' sister, Margaret (Henry) Handley said in a 1922 Indiana newspaper interview that her brothers played the fiddle (violin?) and they would often play for dances in Darrtown, Ohio. She said "My three brothers were of the old school of fiddlers, they played for cotillion dances and the four handed reels".
Mathias' grave registration said he's buried in Darrtown cemetery in lot #5, section #4, block #4 and grave #1. ... show more
