Before DNA!: This photo shows Mrs. Clark Schilder, wife of the Chief of the Division of Identification, Federal Bureau of Investigation, inspecting a death mask of a criminal at the Annual Convention of the International Association Identification. Death masks of criminals were being used by police bureaus throughout the U.S. for identification purposes.

The criminal wasn't identified in the caption of the photo.
