Marked in red are the areas where my Neff ancestors lived and Moses Rentfro family lived. I descend from Jacob Neff (Nave) who married Polly Rentfroe/Renfro/Rentfroe, daughter of Moses. They later moved to Cass Co.(Logansport, IN)about 1826. ** Our Neff family has a connection to president Thomas Jefferson's family. *** The following is from my grandmother's writings...... Moses Rentfroe's first wife was Hannah Rentfroe. Hannah's mother was Mary Randolph. (Closely related to Jane Randolph Jefferson, President Thomas Jefferson's mother. Thomas Jefferson, the president's mother, Jane Randolph, married Peter Jefferson in 1728. Peter's father or grandfather, the older Thomas Jefferson who died in 1687 had a daughter Mary who married Thomas Turpin, cousin of Elizabeth Turpin who was my gr-gr-gr-grandmother. The Turpins and Rentfroes lived on either side of the location of Monticello and many more of them intermarried. As you can see this was on my grandfather Neff's side. This information was found through wills and court records. I'm sure grandpa never knew as his mother, Mary Steele Neff died when grandpa was only 2 1/2 yrs . of age. A.Y's father, William Neff had four wives. Mary was his third wife. Mary's four children, Andrew(my grandfather) Henry, Harriett and Agnes and also Elizabeth Ann Stephenson, child of Mary Steele and her first husband James Stephenson who died of yellow fever on the Ohio river -- were all reared by Mary's brothers and sisters the Saylors, Staffords and Thomas Steele and his good wife Sally of Tipp City, OH. Thomas Turpin, Jr. married Mary Jefferson on 1730. Thomas Turpin was born 1697. Mary Jefferson was the third child of an early Thomas Jefferson. This earlier Thomas's son was Peter Jefferson who married Jane Randolph in Goochland Co., VA in 1728. Jane Randolph was born 2-29-1708 and was the daughter of Isham Randolph of "Dungennes". In 1973 I was privileged to visit Monticello on the way home from the National DAR Convention at Washington DC. Margaret Harrison and her mother, Emma Scholl also visited it wth me. We drove our car and the side trips to places of interest were wonderful. We also visited James City and Williamsburg VA. On the way over we stopped at Philadelphia PA and stayed all night and visited Independence Hall and all the historic buildings associated with it. Will of Peter Jefferson of Albemarle Co., VA made 13 July 1757. Pro. 1757 lists sons, Thomas (President) and Randolph; daughters, Janes, Mary, Elizabeth, Martha, Lucy and Annscott.
Thomas. (All the above was written by Kathryn Neff Brown of Connersville, Indiana, grandmother of Vivian Brown, this contributor) There is more to add to this if needed.
