Neil Armstrong, Man on the Moon
Neil Armstrong, born August 5, 1930, grew up to be the first man (or woman!) to set foot on the moon. And he did so much more with his life in addition to being an astronaut - he was a test pilot, a university professor, an aeronautical engineer, and served in the Korean War. This little boy grew up to explore a lot of our world, physically and mentally!

He was born in Wapakoneta, Ohio to Stephen and Viola (Engel) Armstrong, the eldest of three children. An Eagle Scout, he fell in love with flying at the age of two and never lost that love. In fact, two weeks after his 20th birthday, he became a fully qualified Navy pilot and flew 78 missions in the Korean War (or Korean Conflict).

But he is perhaps best remembered as the commander of Apollo 11 (the crew also consisted of Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins) and his famous statement upon stepping onto the moon: "That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind." The "a" was not heard due to radio interference, so the well-known phrase became "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

After the Apollo 11 flight, Neil Armstrong taught, became active in business, and was still involved in NASA. But we all remember him for his first step onto the moon - and for where we were when we participated in that historic moment.

Neil Armstrong died August 25, 2012 in Columbus, Ohio, due to complications following heart surgery. He was 82 years old.

His family immediately issued a statment: "Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink."

Neil Alden Armstrong
Neil Alden Armstrong, an American astronaut and aeronautical engineer, forever etched his name in history as the first person to set foot on the moon. Born on August 5, 1930, in Wapakoneta, Ohio, Armstrong's remarkable career spanned the frontiers of both aviation and space exploration. In pursuit of his dreams, Armstrong attended Purdue University where he studied aeronautical engineering and further honed his interest in aviation. After graduating in 1955, he served as a naval aviator, and his military career took him to several locations across the United States. In 1962, Armstrong became one of the seven astronauts selected for NASA's second group of astronauts, known as the New Nine. He was chosen for his exceptional piloting skills and engineering expertise. During his time at NASA, Armstrong contributed to several missions, including the Gemini program, where he made history as the first American civilian to fly in space during the Gemini 8 mission in 1966. However, Armstrong's most significant contribution to human history came during the Apollo program. On July 20, 1969, as the commander of Apollo 11, he became the first person to set foot on the lunar surface, uttering the iconic words, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." His historic moonwalk, along with astronaut Buzz Aldrin, remains one of the most defining moments of the 20th century and a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance. As a distinguished pilot, test engineer, and astronaut, his groundbreaking achievements not only pushed the boundaries of human capabilities but also inspired generations worldwide to reach for the stars.

I am researching Tasker, Jones, Bowen, Rees of Wales; Kroetch, Chartrand of Canada; and Boggs, Ferguson, Smith, of West Virginia and Eastern Kentucky. Also Steeples of Kansas. And on my mother's New England roots - well, too numerous to name since she descends from Mayflower passengers as well as Dutch East India captains who arrived with their families before the Mayflower landed further north than was planned. :)
I'm a Founder of AncientFaces and support the community answering questions & helping members make connections to the past (thus my official title of Founder & Content and Community Director). For me, it's been a labor of love for over 20 years. I truly believe with all of my heart that everyone should be remembered for generations to come. I am 2nd generation San Jose and have seen a lot of changes in the area while growing up. We used to be known as the "Valley of Heart's Delight" (because the Valley was covered with orchards and there were many canneries to process the food grown here, which shipped all over the US) - now we have adopted the nickname "Capital of Silicon Valley" and Apple, Ebay, Adobe, Netflix, Facebook, and many more tech companies are within a few miles of my current home in Campbell (including AncientFaces). From a small town of 25,000, we have grown to 1 million plus. And when you add in all of the communities surrounding us (for instance, Saratoga, where I attended high school, living a block from our current Mayor), we are truly one of the big cities in the US. I am so very proud of my hometown. For more information see Kathy - Founder & Content and Community Director

I want to build a place where my son can meet his great-grandparents. My grandmother Marian Joyce (Benning) Kroetch always wanted to meet her great-grandchildren, but she died just a handful of years before my son's birth. So while she didn't have the opportunity to meet him, at least he will be able to know her. For more information about what we're building see About AncientFaces. My father's side is full blood Sicilian and my mother's side is a combination of Welsh, Scottish, German and a few other European cultures. One of my more colorful (ahem black sheep) family members came over on the Mayflower. He was among the first to be hanged in the New World for a criminal offense he made while onboard the ship.
