Sarah Elizabeth (Carroll) Brown
A photo of an article about Sarah Elizabeth (Carroll) Brown (1841-1931), Part 1. Celebrating Sarah's 90th birthday the next day, an article was published in the West Virginia Sunday Exponent-Telegram newspaper on P. 4, May 17, 1931 entitled "West Virginia Women of Century Ago Underwent Hardship and Privation." Sarah was born 18 May 1841 in Harrison Co, Virginia to Godfrey and Mary (Gray) Carroll. On 30 Aug 1858, she married Samuel Van Buren Brown, a farmer, the son of David and Deborah (Stalnaker)Brown. They had one child, Laura Emorgee Brown, who was born 25 Jan 1863 in Holbrook, WV, and who married Byron James Hudkins, a doctor, the son of John and Rebecca (Stout) Hudkins. Laura died 20 March 1917 of surgical complications. Both she and her mother, Sarah, a nurse, had divorced their husbands. Sarah died 16 July 1931 in Clarksburg, Harrison Co, West Virginia. The picture of Sarah which accompanied this news article appears elsewhere on AncientFaces.com and was put there by Carol Hurst whom I wish to thank for sending me this article.
