Oscar Iden-Zeller German Explorer

Photo Details

Oscar Iden-Zeller, a German explorer and the first white man to cross the Tschaun Mountains in Siberia on foot.

Iden-Zeller, an early anthropologist and ethnologist, was largely self taught. He explored and studied much of Russia but his German citizenship caused him problems and he was twice incarcerated in Russia (once accused of being a spy). He died in Gernmany in 1925 after being release from a Russian prison a year earlier.
