Oscar Wilde, born in Ireland, was a writer and poet and famous wit. His only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, became a Hollywood movie and a part of our common lexicon.

He was tried for "gross indecency" for activities with other men and jailed for two years. Upon his release, he left for France, never to return to the U.K.

He died in 1900 at the age of 46 in France of disputed causes.
