Captain Phillips and Lieutenant Yates of the 8th Hussars, in the Crimean War.

Photography was a new technology when Roger Fenton spent March - June 1855 following and documenting the Crimean War. He was paid by the British monarchy to photograph the lands and soldiers involved in the war. He didn't take photos of battle scenes, partially because of the technology (it was difficult to set up) and partially because the government didn't want actual battles pictured.
