This is in the home of Pomp Hall, a black tenant farmer in Creek County, Oklahoma. She had to clean out the ashes before starting the morning fire.

Martha Rice A lot of my black friends, when I grew up, used newspaper to cover the walls. What a good memory. They were so smart. There were holes in our walls that you could throw a rat through.

Martha Rice I slept on the floor one night when we had company and a rat bit me on the neck. I did throw him off. LOL!! It wasn't funny then. I am the oldest of 10 and we were very poor. Our house had absolutely no paint on it. All 10 of us kids love Black people just like ourselves even though Daddy started life a racist, he grew to love them before he died. This picture has very warm memories for me.

Kathy Pinna OH! I woulda thrown that rat, too!! Yes, I love how photos, even of other people, spark memories of our own past and the times we lived in. Just roaming through random photos is a favorite pasttime of mine - and I love your own memories, too. It's great to hear about other peoples' experiences! Thank you!!
