Lorene Edna Ledford was born on August 11, 1906 in Los Angeles, California, USA to parents Loren Edgar Ledford (1871-1929) and Lucy Emma Cecelia Kincaid (1882-1940). She had a brother, William Ray Ledford (1902-1977). She had studied secretarial skills for medical offices and was employed in downtown Los Angeles as a medical secretary. On September 9, 1932 she married Nicholas "Nick" Pierce Kirwan in Los Angeles, California. They had children including a daughter Marcia Kathleen Kirwan (1940-2015).
