Reuben Thomas Ballard

My Grandfather Reuben Thomas Ballard born September 7, 1893. This photo was taken in front of Mount Olivet Baptist Church around 1903-05. In those days church was held once per month and sometimes meetings were held on the Saturday prior to Sunday service.This would explain why grandpa had his shot gun because no hunting or fishing were allowed on Sundays.

Such an interesting observation about the presence of his shotgun! Were these meetings in preparation for the service?

It's interesting that all the folks in the right of the photograph are dressed in a similar tone/color, and the folks on the left are not. Do you think this is just because the photograph composed them that way?

There was a man in the community who would go around the area taking photographs. The quality of the photographs weren't good. The difference must be from the positioning of the pose with some in direct sun.
