RMS Titanic
Photo of the ill-fated RMS Titanic still in dock at (I believe) Southhampton England just prior to the ship's maiden voyage.
After leaving Southampton England on 10 April 1912, the Titanic went to Cherbourg, France and to Queenstown, Ireland before heading to its final destination of New York. At 11;40p on the night of April 4th, 1912, four days after leaving Southampton, she hit an iceberg. The "unsinkable ship'" was going down. Over the next two and a half hours, shee filled with water and sank in the early morning hours of April 15, 1912. Passengers and some crew members were evacuated in lifeboats, many of which were launched only partly filled. A disproportionate number of men – over 90% of those in Second Class – were left aboard due to a "women and children first" policiy followed by the officers loading the lifeboats. When she finally sank, over a thousand people were still on board. Those who had jumped into the water died within minutes from hypothermia. The approximately 710 survivors were taken aboard the RMS Carpathia a few hours later.
