Samuel Leslie Whillis
Pilot Officer Samuel Whillis joined the RAF in 1940 and trained as a flight engineer. His squadron service included 61 Squadron, Bomber Command, after which he was assigned to the newly-formed 617 Squadron. On May 16, 1943, Pilot Officer Whillis lost his life when the Lancaster he was assigned to flew into a high tension pylon near Haldern, Germany, with the loss of the crew. He left behind a wife, Gladys Winifred Whillis.
