Photo Details

Group of Sioux Indians circa 1875. Standing: Joe Merrivale; Young Spotted Tail; Antoine Janis; Seated: Touch the Clouds, Little Big Man, Black Cool. The last two are identified as "rapoves" - does anyone know what that means?

Later note: The consensus seems to be that the note referred to Arapahoe Indians.

Charlotte Unknown Maybe the last two were not Sioux, but Arapahoe and "rapoves" is a misspelling of that name.

Linda Fry I found the original photo in the book, Black People and their Place in World History. The Native Americans are named but then it says the last two were identified as Arapahos.

Kathy Pinna Linda - why do you think this photo was in an African-American history book? Do a couple of the men (perhaps the Arapahos?)have African-American heritage? Thank you so much for clarifying/verifying the Arapaho connection! ;)
