Thoralf emigrated from Norway to South Africa in July 1909 and worked in Zululand, he was friends with the Hillestad family who were neighbors to him in Kongsberg. The Hillestad family had been in South Africa a few years before Thoralf arrived and he ended up marrying the eldest daughter, Henninge Bolling Hillestad and having two children: Thorbjorn Christian Synnestvedt Skolmen and Marie Skolmen. All the current Skolmens in South Africa are descendants of Thoralf Skolmen.
