Walt Whitman 1864
Walt Whitman in 1864, at the age of 45.
Born on Long Island, Walt Whitman was a famous essayist, journalist, and poet even during his own lifetime. Today, he is best known for Leaves of Grass. And for the fact that you have to read his writings in school! Remember "O Captain! My Captain!"? He wrote this poem about the death of Abraham Lincoln.
He died in 1892 at the age of 73 and was a much more interesting (and multifaceted) man than we learned in school
