My grandfather, A.G. Sheffield was an ironworker on the docks in Pennsacola during WWII and an Union man. He would later work on the addition to the FL state capital and Crystal River nuclear plant while also maintaining a farm in Shady Grove. All 5 of his siblings migrated to Washington DC thanks to Great-Aunt Arie who led the way north by becoming an assistant and secretary to a congressman. Each other sibling joined her and led successful lives and careers as a result. Although they made their adults lives in the big city of Washington DC, they never forgot home and returned often well into their elder years. Their birth and home place still stands in Shady Grove.

Sallie Elizabeth (Sheffield) Shallen
Sallie was spirited, outspoken, and not afraid to laugh! She was a country girl from the south who made her way up to Washington DC and who married a Jewish man named Avery Shallen. They had no children, but she left us all a generous gift when she passed away! Because she had no children and few to remember her or visit her grave, I planted a rose bush by it one year when visiting. My paternal Grandmother (A.G.'s wife) kept it alive and well for several years. To this day, I place flowers at my Aunt Sallie's grave and wish I had known her life story in her own words!
