Uncle Sal was an Ensign Second Class and served on the USS Missouri (BB-63) from 1943- 1945. He fought at Iwo Jima and Okinawa and operated the 20-millimeter guns on the top deck of the USS Missouri. On September 2, 1945 Uncle Sal was in Tokyo Bay on the USS Missouri with General MacArthur during the Japanese Surrender Ceremony that ended WWII.
