Description :
George Haneline (4/28/1818-6/6/1872), wears a US belt buckle reversed and upside down in this Civil War photo. The tin type is a negative image and reversed, and the buckle is upside down because southerners wore captured Union equipment. After burning Atlanta, Sherman and his Union forces marched from Savannah northward and burned the George Haneline Plantation in NC. George was a guard at the Salisbury Prison for Union soldiers. The family holds a handwritten memoir by George's son, Crittenden Clay Haneline, of what he was told by his father of the late War of the Rebellion and his experiences.
