Gates (b 1818 in OH), the family lived in the Des Moines area for several generations. Charles Gates sons, Fred (b 1884), Charles (b 1894), Robert (b 1885), Ben (b 1891), Paul (b 1897) were exceptional athletes at Des Moines High Schools.
