Christina Hickman was a full blooded Osage Indian, she was adopted by a family by the name of Hickman, and they gave her the name of Christina, who lived in West Virginia. Christina Hickman was born in Tennessee, December 27, 1774, and passed away in Fountain County the 27th day of November, 1850. Christina and her husband had eleven children.

Christina met James Keeling, he was an English school teacher and trapper. He taught school for 30 years. He was born in West Virginia on April 4, 1769, and passed away, November 16, 1846, at Veedersburg, Indiana. Christina married James Keeling. They emigrated to Dayton, Ohio, Montgomery County in 1813, where they lived for sometime. In 1828, they moved to Van Buren Leep, Fountain County, Indiana. Their daughter, Margaret Keeling was married to (Our Great Grandfather) Philip Butt at Plymouth, Ohio by the Justice of Peace, Samuel Kerney, on June 12, 1823. Philip Butt was born December 27th, 1791 died May 2, 1866 age 74 years, five months and sixteen days. He was buried at the trinkle Cemetery, Veedersburg, Indiana. They had fourteen children.

Lewis Butts (our Grandfather) was born April 10, 1827, near Dayton, Ohio. When he was ten years old he moved with his parents and grandparents (the James Keeling's) to Veedersburg, Indiana. James Keeling, his Grandfather taught school as Veedersburg, Indiana. Lewis Butts met (our Grandmother) Miriam Whittier Rutledge, they married, and had eight children. Two of their children died very young, their names were Frankie [Franklin Hoover Butts] and Lula Butts.

Miriam Whittier Rutledge, daughter of Abraham and Barbara Ellen Deck Rutledge, born December 8, 1829, near Cycian, Kentucky, died December 29, 1912, at Lockwood Missouri. Buried at Greenfield, [Dade,] Missouri. Lewis Butts passed away August 30, 1915 at Veedersburg, Indiana.

Our Grandmother lived near Danville and Fithian, Illinois. Her Father, Abraham Rutledge was a Captain in the Black Hawk War at LaFayette, Indiana. His farm is still in the hands of relatives near Fithian, Illinois and LaFayette, Indiana.

This history was written by someone of my grandfather, Solomon Enoch Butts, generation. I don't have documentation of this story only a copy of the original typed history from Opal Oster (given to me in July 1985).
