This is a story from my husbands branch of the tree and I have gathered all the info about it I could. Great, great Grandpa Stevens came to this country abored a ship somewhere in the northeast. He was a young boy of around eleven or tweleve we were told. He sailed from possibly England or Germany with his parents and older brother. His brother and him were the only ones to make it to America alive. Both parents died aboard ship along the way. Both boys were near the same age not more than two years difference in their ages. The story is told they were sent to an orphanage upon arrival and were to be sent further west as part of work/adoption program. Possibly aboard one of the orphan trains we aren't sure. The story handed down says that the boys heard of this rumor and fled the orphanage in darkness the first night there. They traveled together for the first day then fearing being caught and brought back split up. Our brother went south. The lost brother went north never to be heard from again. Over the years my husband and his cousins and father in the military have heard similar stories from other service men but did not have the time to question their fellow service men. If this story is in your family as well please feel free to contact me. Our brother ended up in Texas and his name lives on today we are all the decendents of Benjamin Franklin Stevens.
