Comments about this story:
I read the marriage records with interest, because my McLAIN line that came to Lawrence County AR before 1850 (via from early 1800s IL, KY and Weakley County TN) have a not-yet-understood-connection with families that lived in Daviees County and Martin County Indiana. MOSER / MOSIER, SHARUM (Shearum, etc), CISSEL (Cecil, Sisel, etc.) and TEWELL (TUEL, TUAL, etc) families were somehow allied with my McLAIN / McCLAIN line.
My great grandfather married Cordelia MOSIER Oct. 1878 in Lawrence County IN after 'roaming' into IN he said in a little history bio in an AR book .. and brought Cordelia home from Loogootee, Daviess, IN to AR.
Five months later, a cousin of his, Perlina Anna SMITH (her mother was Christiana McLAIN SMITH) married John Thomas TEWELL from Martin, IN. John Thomas TEWELL's mother was Delia Ann CISSELL ... a line from KY. In AR in 1883, a T.J. SHARUM came to live in Walnut Ridge. That winter he bagan buying some of the McLAIn and SMITH and TEWELL, as well as LINGO land (Nancy C. SMITH married E. Wesley LINGO) ....T. J. SHARUM's mother was Rosa Ann CISSELL from IN where Thomas J. SHARUM was from. TJ had a sister Eliza who had married a MOSIER in IN.
These lines seem to have come to IN from KY ... where my McLAIN line also lived prior to about 1827, and where some McLAINs apparently remained, while others moved on.
I have all these little tidbits of information, but so far in June 2006 have not been able to connect the dots.
My line in Weakley Co TN was from Charles McLAIN and Elizabeth ? Unknown--both born about 1785 or so, perhaps in NC. Their son, Charles, born about 1805-09 prob. in IL is my ggg grandfather. His wife was Perlina / Pulina A. UNKNOWN b about 1811 TN.
They appear in 1850 Lawrence Co,Strawberry twp, AR with children: Christiana b 1830ish TN, David W. b about 1833 TN, John H. (?Henry) b 1835-37 TN .. my gg grandfather; and Squire or Esquire born 1842 TN. In 1853 in AR they had a son Wm. California McLAIN.
Christiana married 1851-52 to James SMITH, from KY. No marriage record found in Lawrence Co. David W. married Susan E. MULLENS/MULLINS 1855 AR, he died young and she remarried 1859 to Wm. E. FLETCHER in Lawrence Co., AR. John Henry married 1857 to Sarah Catherine AGEE b 1842 in East TN; Squire married Melinda Caroline HARDIN, and Wm. Cal. had several marriages ... to Ellen FRY, then perhaps her sister Martha FRY .. or an INGRAM marriage, then an L.T. BECK, and finally to Nancy Saphronia MEAD of Craighead Co, but she had GA family roots.
Charles McLAIN sr died 1846 in Weakley Co., TN
Charles McLAIN jr died 1869 in Lawrence Co., TN (but had remarried 1866 to Sarah HARMON FRY RILEY who was his widow when he died. His first wife Perlina A. died 1860 (Mortality Sched.)
Christiana died between 1880 census and Dec. 25 1883. Her husband James SMITH of KY died 1870 (Mortality Schedule). Her daughter Perlina Anna SMITH TEWELL, used the SMITH surname, died in Kaw, OK. Her daughter Nancy C. SMITH LINGO disappeared .. no records found for her or E.Wesley LINGO or son James LINGO after Dec. 1883). Missing are Christiana's sons David W. SMITH who married I think to Arabella / R.Belle FRAZIER, John S. SMITH, James C. SMITH, and Charley A. SMITH.
Squire McLAIN & wife Melinda Caroline HARDIN were still alive on the 1900 census, Lawrence Co, Lawrence twp, AR ...and below them was their son James D.? ( Drew ) McLAIN and a wife Lizzie, who also had a son they named James D. McLAIN. Squire also named a daughter Bernise / Bernice, and one Shrilda (Shrulda, Serilda). I think James Drew the son's son, died in Hot Springs, AR. Squire and wife Melinda Caroline HARDIN McLAIN must have both died before 1910 census.
Wm. California lived for awhile in Craighead Co AR with wife Nancy Saphronia MEAD (her mother was a MOON), then moved around 1900 to Newport area, Jackson County, AR where he became a Rt. 1 mail carrier and died May 1912. He lived near my great grandfather William David McLAIN, b 1859 Lawrence Co., AR (son of John Henry and Sarah C. Agee McLAIN) Wm. Cal. and Nancy are buried in Walnut Grove Cem, Newport, Jackson Co., AR.
Wm. David McLAIN's 1st wife Cordelia MOSIER died 1897 and is buried in Walnut Grove Cem, along with some other family members, including Cordelia's daughter Elizabeth "Lettie" McLAIN HOLDEN and her husband John Robert HOLDEN. Also there are children of Wm. David's 2nd wife (my great grandmother) Clara COOPER McLAIN.
She was born 1878 in Monroe Co, AR to Dillard L. COOPER and Parthenia ANDREWS (Anders) HOUSE HOLLEMAN (Holman) COOPER. Clara sometimes used the name Clara D. McLAIN rather than Clara C. They married 1898 and had a large family in Newport, AR where Wm. David was a sawmill owner and land owner, and served 1914-1919 as Jackson County Judge. He was also in business with his son-in-law J.R. HOLDEN in the McLAIN-HOLDEN Land and Lumber Company. Wm. David McLAIN died Oct. 1921 and is buried in Walnut Grove Cem., Newport, AR.
Clara COOPER McLAIN his wife lived to be almost 101 and died at the home of her son Alvin C. McLAIN in McNEIL / Magnolia AR in March 1979. She is buried in Little Rock, AR near her son Robert C. "Pat" McLAIN.
According to a bit of family history recorded by a familyi member in the 1960s (he was born about 1899) he related info that the McLAIN family had come from the Isle of Mull in Scotland, talked about an Uncle Jimmy who went back to TN, family in KY, 7 original brothers who had come to America, a Wilbur and a "Tood" among them. "Tood" may have been called "Tobe" (like lobe) as that name is used at least twice in the line ...and a Court House Record in Walnut Ridge, Lawerence Co, AR names Tobe McLAIN in an 1879 record .. being held by the sheriff, with John Henry putting up the family land as bail for Tobe and a guarantee that he would, indeed, appear in court as required ... to be needed several times during some trial ...according to the record. STill need more info on this 'trial' as I'm not sure what was involved.
Any info on this family will be appreciate. I may be contacted at (connect the spaces) audstan @ chartertn.net Submitted by: audstan Jun 24, 2006
